Ebenezer Cheever was ordained minister of the Congregational Church here December 8, 1819. He continued pastor until April 8, 1823, with an addition to the church in the meantime, of twenty-two members. He baptized thirty-nine children in less than three years. In the spring of 1820, the first Sabbath School was organized here, being held in the schoolhouse and composed exclusively of children. After leaving here, Mr. Cheever was pastor of a church in Waterford NY, and at other places, and d. in 1866, aged 75 years, in New Jersey. He was married twice, his first wife dying in Mont Vernon.
