BIOGRAPHY of MADELINE / MADALENA (PALTENGHI) ANDERSON and CLARENCE WILLIAM ANDERSON Information located at http://www.nh.searchroots.com On a web site about GENEALOGY AND HISTORY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE and its counties TRANSCRIBED BY JANICE BROWN Please see the web site for my email contact. ---------------------------------- The original source of this information is in the public domain, however use of this text file, other than for personal use, is restricted without written permission from the transcriber (who has edited, compiled and added new copyrighted text to same). ----------------------------------- Madeleine aka Madeline aka Madelina aka Madalena PALTENGHI, daughter of Joseph & Florence (Locke) Paltenghi was born in New York State on 6 Jun 1898 [or in New York City, NY on 20 Nov 1896] and died Mar 1971 probably in Milford, Hillsborough County, N.H. In 1910 she was living in Mason, N.H. with her parents, and siblings Eugene and Florence. According to census records, her father was born in NY of Italian & Irish heritage, and her mother was of Canadian-English heritage. Although several biographies show her being born in Mason, N.H., census records and other documents show her being born in New York City. The NY State records, show a Madalin Paltenghi being born in New York City on 20 Nov. 1896. Her social security records indicate that she was born 6 Jun 1898 and that she died Mar 1971, the last place where she collected social security benefits was in Milford, NH so possibly she died there. In 1905 her sister, Florence, was born in Stockbridge, Berkshire Co., MA. Whether her parents were living there at that time, or whether visiting relatives, is not known. At some point, she married Clarence William Anderson [see below]. I have not been able to determine if Madaline and Clarence Anderson had any children. Both Madeleine and Clarence were children's book authors, and in addition, Clarence was an illustrator/painter especially of Western subjects; reportedly Madeleine was also a singer. Madeleine (Paltenghi) Anderson's books include: Honey The City Bear, 1936 Remus Goes To Town 1937 Honey On A Raft 1938 Rumpus Rabbit 1940 Silverpoint 1962 As far as the origin of the PALTENGHI family, I found other Paltenghi family members (i.e. Loretta, b. 1894 in NYC, Eugene, b. abt 1899 NY, and Florence, b. abt 1901 MA who are probably Madaline's siblings; and also a "Ulana" Paltenghi in NYC who possibly is related to Joseph (Madeline's father). Clarence William "Herk" Anderson, son of Clarence Anderson, was born 12 April 1891 in Wahoo, Nebraska, of Swedish parents, and died May 1971 probably in Boston, Suffolk Co., MA (according to the social security death index). According to one biography, Clarence's father (Clarence Sr.) ran a leather goods and harness store in Wahoo during the latter part of the last century. Clarence W. "Herk" Anderson graduated from Wahoo High School in 1909. He then taught for two years in a rural school. He left that profession to attend the Chicago Art Institute. In 1925 he went to New York where he dabbled in commercial art and began to study horses. Here, he wrote and illustrated his first book Billy and Blaze; a story of a boy and his horse. This book paved the way for a series of more than 40 books. Anderson's paintings and lithographs earned him a national reputation, and his work was displayed across the country. Clarence Anderson's books and illustrations include: Graphic Novels: Billy and Blaze (1936) Blaze and the Forest Fire (1938) Blaze Finds the Trail (1950) Blaze and Thunderbolt (1955) Blaze and the Mountain Lion (1959) Blaze and the Lost Quarry (1966) Blaze and the Gray Spotted Pony (1968) Blaze Shows the Way (1969) Blaze Finds Forgotten Roads (1970) Blaze and the Indian Cave (1971) Novels: Afraid to Ride (1957) Phantom, Son of the Gray Ghost (1969) Series: Billy and Blaze --------------------------------- --------------------------------- SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Anderson, C.W.
