Biography of Stephen Harriman Long:
Long, Stephen Harriman, 1784-1864, American explorer, b. Hopkinton,
N.H. As an army engineer, Long was sent on several exploring and surveying
expeditions. The first in 1817 was to the region of the upper Mississippi
and the Fox-Wisconsin portage; it is recorded in his Voyage in a Six-oared
Skiff to the Falls of St. Anthony (1860). A journey to the Rocky Mts.
in 1819-20 provided much new knowledge of the mountains. He climbed
several peaks, including Long's Peak, and explored the regions of
the Platte and Arkansas rivers. Edwin James's Account of an Expedition
from Pittsburgh to the Rocky Mountains (2 vol. and an atlas, 1822-23)
tells of that journey. In 1823, Long led an expedition to determine
the source of the Minnesota River and to study the United States-Canadian
boundary W of the Great Lakes. Some of his notes were used in W. H.
Keating's Narrative of an Expedition to the Source of the St. Peter's
River (1824). Chosen to select a route for the Baltimore and Ohio
RR, he made a survey that resulted in an authoritative railroad manual,
with tables of grades and curves [from Infoplease.com]
-------------------
Longs Peak, in northern Colorado, one of the tallest of the Rocky
Mountains, was first sighted (1820) and named by the American explorer
Stephen Harriman Long. Long became a U.S. Army engineer in 1814 and
3 years later was sent to explore the upper Mississippi and the portage
of the Fox and Wisconsin rivers. In 1820 he headed a Rocky Mountains
expedition and, like Zebulon Montgomery Pike before him, reported
that the area that is now Colorado was uninhabitable. This view influenced
U.S. expansion for almost 4 decades. Long examined the sources of
the Minnesota River and the adjacent northern boundary of the United
States in 1823. He subsequently was an advisor to various railroad
companies.

A second
documentary, no source listed:
Stephen Harriman Long was one of many great explorers found in America
history, from whom all other Americans have benefited . Stephen Long
was born in Hopkinton, New Hampshire, on December 30, 1784. He graduated
from Dartmouth College in 1809 at the age of twenty-five. After spending
a few years as a public school principal, in 1814, he became a professor
of mathematics at the United States Military Academy (West Point).
The following year he first became a member of the United States Army
Corps of Engineers. Stephen Long taught mathematics at West Point
until 1816, when he was promoted to second lieutenant and one of the
first officers in the newly established group of Topographical Engineers.
(This corps created during the War of 1812, later became known as
the Army Corps of Engineers, and eventually, in 1823, it became the
United States Army corps of Topographical Engineers). As a member
of the corps, he was chosen to lead major explorations to two different
areas o f the United States. One of his explorations was to the area
just west o f the upper portion of the Mississippi river, and his
other major exploration was to the Rocky Mountain range, in the states
of Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Long was chosen to
lead his first expedition in 1817, to search out possible sites for
army forts west of the Mississippi river. He helped find the ideal
location where two major forts w ere set up, and even helped in the
construction process of one of them. I n 1823 he was chosen to lead
a second expedition to the area in and around Minnesota. This time
he was asked to search out the sources of three major rivers. In Long's
other major expedition he was chosen to lead a group of engineers
to the Rocky Mountain range. Here he was given a couple of assignments.
He was unsuccessful in one aspect, but overall a great deal of information
was learned from this exploration. In fact, th e amount learned was
compared even to that of Lewis and Clark's expedition to the area
bought by the United States in the Louisiana Purchase. It was on this
expedition that he and his crew are well known for initiating the
use of the steamboat on the Missouri river. At the age of 40, Long
was through with his explorations. He spent many of his later y ears
helping to route railroads, and to guide other civil engineer projects
given to him through the army corps, and with his knowledge of the
geography of the United States, he was able to be of great help. Stephen
Long continued to work for the corps, eventually presiding over it,
until 1863, when he retired. Major Long was chosen to lead two expeditions
to the upper Midwest, in and just south of the state of Minnesota.
Long was chosen by the war department of the government to lead his
first expedition in 1817, at the age of thirty-three. The purpose
of this expedition was to search out possible areas for future army
forts, or other "military installations," in the state of
Minnesota, and the states along the Mississippi south of Minnesota
(Bonlander, 1992; pp. 288). He was to collect both topographical and
scientific information. He was also told to report on the presence
of any British traders on the upper Mississippi frontier. The government
hoped that Long could find areas for army forts needed not only to
protect the United States fur traders from the "incursions"
of the British and its traders. They also in hope that t hey could
subjugate the hostile Indians of that area, that were causing problems
for the United States (Bonlander, 1992; pp. 288). Long and his s mall
party started their journey in early July, and first arrived in a
place called Prairie du Chien. The small group traveled along the
Arkansas River, and eventually up the Mississippi River as far north
as the Falls of St. Anthony, in an area known today as the city of
Minneapolis, Minnesota.
